Colorado Program Requirements

Who is required to install an ignition interlock device in Colorado?

Anyone convicted of a DUI, DWAI, or DUI per se in Colorado is required to install an ignition interlock device as a condition of license reinstatement. You may also be required to install one if you refused a chemical test, even without a conviction. Your DMV reinstatement letter will specify whether an interlock is required in your case.

How long do I need to keep an ignition interlock device?

The required duration depends on your offense:

  • First DUI (after Jan 1, 2009): 8 months minimum — eligible for early reinstatement after 30 days of full compliance
  • First DUI with BAC of .17 or higher: 2 years
  • Second or third DUI: 2 years
  • Habitual Traffic Offender with one alcohol-related offense after July 1, 2000: 4 years

Your clock starts the day you are issued your interlock-restricted license by the DMV — not the day of installation.

What does the interlock program cost in Colorado?

Monthly device lease fees typically range from $70–$80/month, which includes periodic calibration. Additional costs may include:

  • Installation labor fee (varies by vehicle)
  • DMV reinstatement fees
  • SR-22 insurance surcharge from your insurer
  • Alcohol education class fees (if required by your case)

Call us at 970‑515‑5740 for pricing specific to your situation.

What BAC level will cause the device to fail?

Colorado interlock devices are set to prevent the vehicle from starting if your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is 0.02% or higher — well below Colorado's legal driving limit of 0.08%. This means even small amounts of alcohol from certain mouthwashes, foods, or medications can register. Always rinse your mouth with water before testing.

What is an SR‑22 and do I need one?

An SR‑22 is a certificate of financial responsibility filed by your insurance company directly with the Colorado DMV. It is not a type of insurance — it's proof you carry the required liability coverage. Most DUI/DWAI convictions require one. Contact your insurer and ask them to submit it electronically to the Colorado DMV. Keep your policy active for the full duration of your reinstatement period — a lapse will trigger immediate license suspension.

Can I drive a vehicle without an interlock while enrolled in the program?

No. While on an interlock-restricted license, you are only permitted to operate vehicles equipped with a functioning, approved ignition interlock device. Driving a non-interlock vehicle — even someone else's car — is a violation of your restricted license and can result in criminal charges, extended program requirements, or full revocation.

Getting Started & Installation

What do I need to bring to my installation appointment?
  • Valid Colorado ID or driver's license
  • Colorado vehicle registration
  • Completed client intake form (available on our Forms page)
  • Payment — we accept cash, credit, and debit (no American Express)

If you need to complete an ignition interlock affidavit, we can assist you. Notary services are available on-site.

Is an ignition interlock device the same as a breathalyzer?

Yes, people often use the word breathalyzer when they mean an ignition interlock device. The device is connected to your vehicle and requires a breath sample before start-up and during requested rolling retests.

Can InterlockGo help with Colorado DMV interlock paperwork?

Yes. We help clients understand the Colorado DMV interlock steps, installation reporting, affidavits, and reinstatement forms. We are not a law firm and do not provide legal advice, but we can help you prepare the interlock documents connected to your appointment.

Where should I go if I searched interlock near me or interlock Greeley?

InterlockGo NOCO is at 3610 35th Avenue Unit 7, Evans, CO, minutes from Greeley. If you searched interlock near me or interlock Greeley, our Evans service center handles Lifesafer and Guardian interlock installation, calibration, and removal.

Do you sell auto parts?

No. InterlockGo NOCO is an ignition interlock installation and calibration service center, not an auto parts retailer. We work on the approved interlock device and related vehicle wiring for your Lifesafer or Guardian program.

How long does installation take?

Installation typically takes 2–3 hours, depending on your vehicle's year, make, and model. After installation, we'll do a hands-on training session (about 15 minutes) so you leave confident operating your device. We drive to the rear of the building — that's the garage entrance.

Does the interlock work on any vehicle?

Ignition interlock devices can be installed on most gasoline and diesel passenger vehicles, trucks, SUVs, and motorcycles. Some older vehicles or those with unusual electrical systems may require additional work. Call us before your appointment if you have a diesel, hybrid, or electric vehicle so we can confirm compatibility.

Will installation damage my vehicle?

No. Our certified technicians install the device by tapping into your vehicle's ignition wiring — a clean, reversible process. Upon removal, we restore your vehicle to its original wiring configuration. We've performed hundreds of installations with no vehicle damage.

How does InterlockGo notify the Colorado DMV after installation?

We electronically submit your lease agreement to the Colorado DMV within 1–3 business days of your installation. Because of this, you should schedule your DMV written exam at least 72 hours after your install appointment — the DMV must receive our submission before they can issue your restricted permit. We handle all the reporting paperwork on our end.

Which device should I choose — Lifesafer or Guardian?

Both devices are Colorado DMV-approved and meet all state requirements. Here's a quick comparison:

  • Lifesafer LS250: Camera-equipped, 4× less battery drain than older models, real-time reporting, 24/7 support line, compact handset
  • Guardian AMS2500: Reliable, widely used across Colorado, straightforward operation, strong support network

Call us and we'll help you pick the right device based on your vehicle and situation.

Daily Device Use

How do I start my vehicle with an ignition interlock?
  1. Get into your vehicle and put on your seatbelt.
  2. Do not put the key in the ignition yet.
  3. Press the button on the device and wait for "BLOW NOW" or the ready indicator.
  4. Blow a steady breath into the mouthpiece for 4–6 seconds as directed by the device.
  5. If you pass, the device will display "START" or "PASS" — insert your key and start the vehicle.
  6. If your BAC registers too high, the device enters a temporary lockout. Wait, rinse your mouth with water, and retest when prompted.
What is a rolling retest and how do I handle it while driving?

A rolling retest is a breath sample required while your vehicle is already running. The device will beep and display a prompt at random intervals — typically 4 to 45 minutes after startup. You have several minutes to complete it safely.

How to take it safely:

  1. When the device prompts you, acknowledge it and reduce speed.
  2. Pull over when it's safe to do so — you are not required to take the test while moving.
  3. Pick up the handset and blow a steady breath as directed.
  4. Wait for the device to confirm "PASS" before continuing to drive.

If you miss or fail a rolling retest, the device logs the event and may activate horn or lights as an alert. Repeated missed retests are reported at your next calibration and can be treated as violations.

What is the hum pattern and why do I need to do it?

The "blow and hum" is a technique built into some devices to prevent someone else from providing a breath sample on your behalf. The device detects the vibration of humming through the mouthpiece while you blow. When prompted to hum, blow steadily and hum a low note simultaneously. Keep continuous airflow — do not stop and restart. We demonstrate exactly how to do this during your post-installation training session.

I failed a test and I haven't been drinking — what do I do?

Don't panic. Certain substances can temporarily cause a false reading:

  • Mouthwash or toothpaste containing alcohol
  • Hand sanitizer (alcohol vapors lingering in a closed vehicle)
  • Some energy drinks, kombucha, or fermented beverages
  • Certain over-the-counter medications or breath sprays
  • Even bread, ripe fruit, or spicy food can briefly register

What to do: Rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and wait 5 minutes. When the device prompts you to retest, blow again. If the retest passes, your vehicle will start normally. A single initial fail that's followed by a pass is logged but is generally not treated as a violation in most cases.

Does the interlock drain my car battery?

All interlock devices draw a small amount of standby power. The Lifesafer LS250 is designed with 4× less battery drain than older models, which is one of its key advantages. If your vehicle's battery is already weak or aging, we recommend having it tested before installation. If your battery dies with the device installed, call us or the device manufacturer's 24/7 support line — they'll walk you through the recovery process without triggering a violation.

Can my passenger take the test for me?

No — and attempting this is a serious violation. Modern devices include camera systems that photograph the person providing the breath sample. The camera image is uploaded to the DMV at your next calibration. If someone other than you is captured providing the sample, it is reported as circumvention, which carries the same penalties as a failed test — and potentially criminal charges. The only person who should ever blow into the device is the enrolled driver.

Calibration & Service

How often do I need to come in for calibration?

Colorado requires your device to be calibrated and have its data uploaded every 60 days at minimum. Colorado clients are also eligible to operate on a 45-day calibration interval. We schedule your appointments in advance and send reminders. Most of our clients come in monthly to stay comfortably ahead of their deadline.

What happens if I miss my calibration appointment?

Once your device reaches its service deadline without a completed calibration, it enters lockout mode — the vehicle will not start. You'll need to call us or have the vehicle towed to our shop to be serviced. Missed calibrations are reported to the Colorado DMV and can result in extended interlock requirements or license action. If you need to reschedule, call us at least 24 hours in advance to avoid a missed appointment fee.

What happens during a calibration visit?

During your calibration visit our technician will:

  • Download your device's recorded data and upload it to the Colorado DMV
  • Verify device accuracy and recalibrate as needed
  • Inspect all hardware connections
  • Review any logged events (fails, missed retests) with you
  • Schedule your next appointment before you leave

Most visits take 20–30 minutes.

Can I get calibrated at any Lifesafer or Guardian location?

Yes. Both Lifesafer and Guardian have nationwide service networks. If you're traveling or can't make it to our Evans location, you can get calibrated at any authorized provider in the network. Just let us know in advance so we can coordinate. Use the store locator at lifesafer.com or guardianinterlock.com.

Violations & Lockouts

What happens if I fail 3 breath tests in 12 consecutive months?

Under Colorado law, if the device records 3 failed breath tests within any 12-month period, you may be subject to additional license suspension and up to one year of extended interlock time for each set of three failures. These events are automatically reported to the DMV during each calibration data upload. This is why it's important to address any false positives immediately — rinse your mouth and retest — so a single incident doesn't become a pattern.

What is a lockout and how do I get a temporary override code?

A lockout occurs when the device prevents the vehicle from starting. Common causes include a missed calibration appointment, repeated failed tests, or a detected tamper event.

To get a temporary override code so you can drive to a service center:

The override code temporarily lifts the lockout so you can get to a service center. It does not erase the lockout event — everything is still reported to the DMV.

Will failed tests and violations be reported to the DMV and my court?

Yes. Every time your device data is uploaded at a calibration visit, the complete record — passed tests, failed tests, missed retests, lockout events — is submitted to the Colorado DMV. There are no hidden events. The DMV may notify your court or probation officer. This is exactly why operating the device correctly and maintaining your calibration schedule is so important.

Can someone tamper with or bypass the device?

Attempting to tamper with, circumvent, or remove the device without authorization is a Class 1 misdemeanor in Colorado and results in immediate license revocation and criminal charges. Modern devices include cameras, GPS tracking, and tamper sensors. Any tampering attempt is automatically logged and reported. The consequences are never worth it — just operate the device correctly.

Removal & Reinstatement

How do I know when I'm eligible to have the device removed?

Your interlock period ends on the date shown on your restricted license or your DMV correspondence. Before removal, you'll need to have:

  • Completed the full interlock period (starting from the date your restricted license was issued)
  • No outstanding violations or time extensions
  • Received written authorization from the Colorado DMV

We monitor your compliance and will let you know when removal is approaching. Do not attempt to remove the device yourself — this is treated as tampering regardless of your program status.

What is the removal process?

Once you have DMV authorization to remove the device:

  1. Call us to schedule a removal appointment.
  2. Bring your DMV removal authorization or confirmation letter.
  3. Our technician removes the device and restores your vehicle's original wiring — typically about 1 hour.
  4. We submit removal paperwork to the DMV electronically.

There is typically a removal fee. Call us for current pricing.

How do I get my full, unrestricted license back after removal?

After the device is removed, visit a Colorado DMV office to apply for full license reinstatement. Bring:

  • Proof of device removal (we can provide documentation)
  • Valid Colorado ID
  • Any remaining DMV reinstatement fees
  • Proof that your SR-22 requirement has been satisfied (if applicable)

Once the DMV processes your application, they will issue your full, unrestricted driver's license.

What happens to my SR‑22 insurance after removal?

Your SR‑22 requirement period is typically tied to your overall reinstatement period, not just the interlock. Do not cancel your SR‑22 policy until you receive written confirmation from the Colorado DMV that it is no longer required. Canceling early will automatically trigger a license suspension. Confirm the exact end date with both your insurance company and the DMV before making any changes.
